The Lagos State Police Command announced on Saturday that officers had apprehended a man accused of deceitfully stealing an Uber car from its driver.
Spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest.
Hundeyin explained that on July 5, around 8:00 pm, the Akinpelu Police Division received a report from an Uber driver, whose identity was not disclosed.
The driver recounted picking up a passenger who identified himself as Isaiah at the NNPC Filling Station in Maryland. He then drove Isaiah to a hotel in the Oshodi area.
While at the hotel, the suspect purchased a plate of pepper soup and an energy drink for the driver.
Hundeyin detailed that, “In the process, when the suspect was looking for a cotton bud to clean his ear, the driver gave him his car key to use.”
The driver reported that Isaiah took the car key, went downstairs, and drove off in his Toyota Corolla.
Fortunately, a police team conducting a stop and search operation on Boladale Street intercepted the suspect. Unable to provide a satisfactory account of the car’s ownership, the man was arrested.
As officers were preparing to take the suspect to the station, the Uber driver arrived on the scene and identified his car. The suspect is currently detained, pending further investigation.
