Adamawa State Police Command on Friday apprehended a 19-year-old man, identified as Aliyu Yaro, for allegedly taking the life of his three-day-old baby boy.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Spokesperson for the State Police Command, CSP Suleiman Nguroji, the infant was the child of Yaro’s girlfriend, and Yaro hails from Kwacham Ward in the Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The tragic incident came to light when Yaro’s girlfriend, Safiya, accused him of murdering the newborn just three days after birth.
During questioning, Yaro reportedly confessed to the crime, eventually guiding officers to the infant’s burial location, where the remains were unearthed.
In his confession, Yaro detailed his relationship with Safiya, explaining that he had impregnated her. Following the birth, Safiya persistently reached out, urging him to take responsibility for their baby.
“He narrated that he impregnated the mother of the deceased, who happens to be his girlfriend. After the delivery, she continued to call him to come and take responsibility for the baby,” the statement read.
Aliyu further explained that he visited Safiya’s residence one night after receiving her call, where he asked her to fetch water for him. Seizing this moment, he took the infant and later buried the baby around 9:00 p.m. at a location known as Girpata in Mubi.
Reacting to the incident, Adamawa State’s Commissioner of Police, Morris Dankombo, expressed deep concern and has ordered that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive investigation and prosecution.
