The Federal Road Safety Corps in Oyo have declared that no fewer than 609 road accidents, 261 persons deaths with 1,700 injuries have been recorded from January to November in the state.
The PUNCH reported that FRSC Sector Commander in Oyo, Joshua Adekanye, disclosed this on Wednesday in Ibadan, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Adekanye, who attributed the major cause of the crashes to speeding, wrong overtaking and tyre burst, said the command recorded 609 crashes within the period.
According to the command, a lot of measures have been put in place to reduce to the barest minimum, road traffic crashes before, during and after the end of the year, especially, because of the high traffic that usually characterised the Yuletide celebration.
One of the ways the Corps is mitigating road accidents is through the flagging off its Ember Months campaign, which was done as early as October.
Another means of achieving safety on the roads, Adekanye said, would be to engage in joint patrols with other sister security agencies to address the high flow of traffic, as no fewer than 880 Regular Marshals and 890 Special Marshals would be deployed to ensure free flow of traffic during the Yuletide celebration by the command in the state.
Adekanye added, “We have also injected 35 patrol vehicles, two motorcycles, two towing trucks as well as entered into partnership with towing trucks association, for prompt removal of obstruction during this period.”
The sector commander also advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles were in good condition and shun night travelling to avoid crashes and other unforeseen circumstances.
