An Oyo State Mobile Court has ordered the remand of a driver, Oke Ademola, at Agodi Prison for allegedly attacking two officials of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority.
The incident took place at Agodi Gate Bus Stop, where Ademola was accused of physically assaulting OYRTMA officers Kareem Yakubu and Ogunjimi Ayotunde. He was reportedly driving an unlicensed Toyota Camry at the time of the altercation.
Appearing before the court on Friday, Ademola faced six charges, including running a red light, refusing to park at designated motor parks, resisting arrest, assaulting an officer, driving without a valid license, and operating an unregistered vehicle. He pleaded guilty to the charge of assault.
Magistrate F.R. Olaniyan, who presided over the case, reserved judgment until February 26, 2025. Until then, Ademola will remain in custody at Agodi Prison.
Reacting to the incident in a statement on Saturday, OYRTMA Chairman Major Adekoya Adesagba condemned the attack and expressed concern over the increasing cases of motorists violating traffic laws and confronting law enforcement officers.
“This kind of lawlessness is becoming too rampant and counterproductive to our efforts in ensuring orderly traffic flow in the state,” Adesagba stated.
He stressed the importance of compliance with traffic laws to maintain public safety and warned that OYRTMA would not tolerate assaults on its officers.
“We urge all motorists to adhere to traffic rules and regulations for the benefit of everyone,” he said. “OYRTMA remains committed to its mandate and will not be intimidated by the actions of a few individuals who prioritize personal interests over public safety.”
Adesagba also highlighted a worrying increase in attacks on OYRTMA personnel, including fatal incidents. He assured the public that the agency would continue to enforce traffic regulations while ensuring the safety of its officers.
“This case serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of violating traffic laws and assaulting law enforcement officers,” he added.
