Osun State Police Command has confirmed the death of one Adeyemi Adewale while participating in a football competition in Osogbo, the state capital.
Adeyemi Adewale reportedly slumped on the field during the Adeleke Memorial Cup Final match.
According to The PUNCH, Adewale, 29, was a player representing the Ilesa West Local Government Area football team. The match was being held at Ataoja School of Science when he suddenly collapsed.
Efforts to save him proved futile as he was rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital (Uniosun), where medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, Yemisi Opalola, spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, said the tragic event has left the community in shock.
“Today (Thursday), while the Adeleke Memorial Cup Final match was going on at Ataoja School of Science, one Adeyemi Adewale, male, aged 29, a player of the Ilesa West Football Team, slumped on the pitch. He was rushed to Uniosun Teaching Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by a doctor,” Opalola stated.
She added that investigations have commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue at Uniosun Teaching Hospital.
