The Amotekun Corps Commander in Osun, Brigadier General Bashir Adewunmbi, has advocated for the transformation of the Amotekun outfit into a state policing system throughout the South-West region of Nigeria.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Osogbo, Adewunmbi emphasized that such an upgrade would bolster the region’s security framework, thereby ensuring the protection of lives and property.
He highlighted that converting Amotekun into a state police force would significantly improve community policing efforts within the region.
“It will foster closer ties between the people and security agencies, and enhance intelligence sharing for a more effective fight against crime,” he noted.
Adewunmbi also stressed that the upgrade should include equipping the outfit with advanced arms and ammunition to maximize their operational efficiency.
“It will also empower them to prosecute criminals in courts, this will be a step in the right direction,” he asserted.
He praised the bravery and effectiveness that Amotekun has already demonstrated in combating crime, indicating its potential for enhanced performance if upgraded.
“I am in full support of the call for state police. It will help to complement the efforts of other security agencies,” Adewunmbi said, adding that having security personnel who are familiar with the local terrain would greatly benefit the system.
