The Ogun State Government has reiterated its dedication to collaborating with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and other relevant stakeholders to cultivate a thriving cashew industry.
According to The PUNCH, this commitment was underscored in a statement released on Wednesday by the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, during a one-day intervention program and distribution of cashew seedlings to farmers.
This initiative, organized by NEPC in conjunction with the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, took place at the Obas’ Complex in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.
The event was designed to enhance Ogun State’s competitive edge in cashew production and to fortify the One State, One Product initiative under the State Committee on Export Promotion.
Onasanya emphasized that this program is crucial for positioning Ogun State as a major player in Nigeria’s cashew export sector, thus contributing to the nation’s economic diversification efforts.
“Cashew has long been a crop of economic importance in Ogun State, as it can significantly contribute to the state’s revenue, create jobs, and promote sustainable development in our rural communities,” Onasanya remarked.
He highlighted that the intervention program serves as a valuable opportunity to tackle pressing issues such as capacity building and training, infrastructure and technology enhancements, and improving market access and information for cashew farmers.
This, he believes, will foster a business-friendly environment essential for the growth of the industry.
Onasanya urged all stakeholders to maintain their commitment and collaborative spirit, leveraging the program to lay a robust foundation for a dynamic and sustainable cashew industry.
This initiative is expected to benefit farmers and exporters alike, and contribute significantly to the broader economic development of Ogun State and Nigeria.
The host commissioner, Mr. Adebola Sofela, emphasized the importance of cashew production in the state’s agricultural landscape.
He described it as a key economic driver that not only supports prosperity and employment but also sustains local families.
Representing NEPC, Director of Product Development, Mrs. Evelyn Obidike, noted that the council remains dedicated to advancing cashew production through the One State, One Product initiative. The goal is to elevate the industry to new heights.
In a goodwill message, the Akarigbo of Remo Land, HRM Babatunde Ajayi, conveyed through Elemunren of Emuren HRH, Adesegun Alowole, praised the state government for its collaboration with NEPC to boost cashew production. He also called for further interventions to support farmers across all local government areas in Ogun State.
The State Coordinator of NEPC, Mrs. Francisca Odega, welcomed attendees by stating that the event represents the council’s commitment to improving the cashew industry.
She highlighted that the intervention aims to provide farmers with an upgraded and specialized cashew breed suitable for export, reflecting the high quality of cashew production in the state.
