A landlord named Apeh Benjamin was reported dead following a heated dispute with his tenant in Aribabu village, Sotubo, Ogun State.
The altercation arose due to the tenant’s unpaid rent.
The tenant, simply known as Emmanuel, had threatened the landlord’s life during the confrontation.
The Ogun State Police Command announced on Monday that the landlord collapsed and died around 6:30 am on Sunday.
The State Police Command’s Spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, said, an investigation is underway to determine the precise cause of death.
“One Apeh Benjamin of Aribabu village, Sotubo Ogun State a landlord slumped, and died at about 0630hrs on 2nd of June, over a heated argument with one Emmanuel his tenant who threatened to kill his landlord, over indebted rent.
“Investigation is on,” she said.
This incident was not the first time a landlord has died following a conflict with a tenant.
In March 2023, the Ogun State Police arrested a 33-year-old woman, Ifeoma Ossai, on charges of killing her 50-year-old landlord, Monday Oladele, during a dispute over an electricity bill.
At the time, the then Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, issued a statement to the press regarding the case.
He noted that the suspect, a single mother, was taken into custody after Olaleye Taiwo, the deceased’s brother, filed a complaint at the Sango Ota Divisional Police Headquarters.
“Men of Ogun State Police Command on Saturday 11th of March 2023, arrested a 33-year old woman, Ifeoma Ossai, for killing her 50-year old landlord, Monday Surulere Oladele, over a minor disagreement.
“The suspect was arrested following a report lodged at Sango Ota divisional headquarters by one Olaleye Taiwo, who reported that his brother, Monday Oladele has a disagreement with his tenant over the payment of the electricity bill, and in the process, the said tenant grabbed the manhood of the deceased and dragged him with it.
“Consequently, the landlord fell unconsciously on the ground and he was rushed to General Hospital, Ota where the doctor on duty confirmed him dead,” the statement read partly.
