Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has expressed his sympathy to Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, and the people of the state following the devastating flood that hit Maiduguri, the state capital.
The flood has caused a significant humanitarian crisis, leaving thousands displaced and several lives lost.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun highlighted the need for urgent assistance, stressing that the severity of the disaster calls for support from across Nigeria.
He remarked, “I express my heartfelt sympathy to my brother, Governor Babagana Zulum, and the people of Borno State, as they navigate this devastating flood. The situation has led to a major humanitarian crisis, and it is a time when collective support is crucial.”
Governor Abiodun further acknowledged the unavoidable nature of such disasters but commended the swift action taken by the Borno State government and the Federal Government.
“While natural disasters are often beyond human control, the timely response from the government can significantly ease the suffering of the people. I commend the efforts already made to address the crisis and provide immediate relief to the affected communities.”
The flood, which struck on Tuesday, has displaced over 414,000 people and claimed 30 lives.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency, the disaster was triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam after heavy rainfall, causing the worst flooding Maiduguri has seen in three decades.
NEMA spokesman, Manzo Ezekiel, said that the death toll had reached 30, with nearly half a million residents forced to flee their homes.
Governor Abiodun assured the people of Borno that Ogun State stands in solidarity with them. “The people of Ogun are with you in this trying time, and our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families,” he said.
