The wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, has emphasized the need for robust support systems, care, and justice for survivors of gender-based violence.
She commended the state government’s initiative, under the World Bank-supported Ogun State Economic Transformation Project, to establish a Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Ijebu Ode.
Speaking at the inauguration of the SARC facility on Wednesday, Mrs. Abiodun lauded the project as a significant stride towards building a society where survivors have access to comprehensive support and justice.
“The construction of this centre is a bold step towards achieving our vision of a society where survivors receive not just hope, but also the care and justice they need,” Mrs. Abiodun said.
As Chairperson of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law Management Committee, she reflected on her experiences addressing numerous cases of sexual assault, rape, and child abuse. She stressed the critical role of referral centres in providing immediate emotional and medical support to survivors.
“The VAPP Law, which we have worked tirelessly to implement, has empowered survivors, held perpetrators accountable, and increased both reported cases and successful prosecutions. This law has brought communities together to stand against GBV,” she added.
Mrs. Abiodun also commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, healthcare professionals, and social workers, highlighting their impact on improving lives. “Each case demonstrates the power of coordinated responses in changing lives for the better,” she noted.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Adijat Adeleye, described the SARC as more than a structure, calling it “a beacon of hope and resilience.” She emphasized that the centre is a haven for survivors, offering professional care, compassion, and the tools they need to rebuild their lives.
Mrs. Adeleye urged all stakeholders, including government institutions, civil society organizations, and community leaders, to unite in the fight against sexual violence.
“This centre is a symbol of our collective commitment to creating a society where survivors are empowered and perpetrators are held accountable,” she stated.
The World Bank team lead, Ms. Pamela Chebiwott Tuitott, highlighted the broader objectives of OGSTEP, which include fostering economic growth, strengthening the agri-food value chain, and addressing gender gaps. She affirmed that the referral centre aligns with these goals by addressing gender-based violence and promoting inclusivity.
OGSTEP Project Coordinator, Mrs. Mosunmola Owo-Odunsi, reiterated the importance of gender-based interventions in helping survivors rebuild their lives. “We must support initiatives like this to enable survivors to move forward with hope and confidence,” she said.
