Prince Kabir Olaoye has escalated his legal challenge over the Soun of Ogbomoso title to the Supreme Court following last Tuesday’s Court of Appeal ruling, which upheld the selection of Oba Ghandi Olaoye.
Kabir initially filed a lawsuit in 2022 (HOG/27/2022), contesting the nomination and selection of then-Prince Olaoye, citing alleged violations of the Soun Chieftaincy Declaration.
Despite the legal challenge, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde approved Olaoye’s nomination, leading to his installation by the kingmakers in September 2023.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn the following month when an Oyo State High Court in Ogbomoso nullified Oba Olaoye’s appointment.
In response, the Oyo State government secured an injunction to halt the enforcement of the judgment, allowing for the monarch’s coronation in December 2023. The state also appealed the ruling of the Ogbomoso court.
Last Tuesday, the Court of Appeal in Ibadan overturned the high court’s verdict and reaffirmed Oba Olaoye’s position as the Soun of Ogbomoso.
Speaking to The PUNCH on Sunday, Prince Kabir expressed dissatisfaction with the appellate court’s ruling and revealed his decision to take the case to the Supreme Court.
“I am not satisfied with the judgment of the appeal court. We are not relenting until we reclaim our mandate through the Supreme Court. We are not giving up. Outright, we say no to the judgment given by the appeal court in Ibadan.
“We are going to the Supreme Court. We are not in agreement with the judgment of the appeal court. So, for this reason, we are heading to the Supreme Court,” he stated.
