The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has apprehended two suspected members of a notorious tricycle-snatching syndicate known for dispossessing operators and passengers of their belongings.
Confirming the arrest at the command’s headquarters in Awka on Wednesday, the state NSCDC commandant, Olatunde Maku, stated that the suspects were nabbed on Tuesday after allegedly seizing a tricycle at Araba Umuzocha, Awka.
“At about 9 am on Tuesday, acting on a tip-off, operatives of the command intercepted a three-man gang operating along Araba Umuzocha and its environs.
“Nemesis caught up with them after they forcefully snatched a tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, from a victim near Regina Junction by Zik’s Avenue, Awka. Two of the suspects were arrested while one managed to escape and is currently at large,” Maku said.
The arrested individuals were identified as 24-year-old Obum Charles of No. 4 Umueze Road, Amudo Village, Awka, and 27-year-old Chukwunonso Ekeh of No. 36 Onueyiagu Street, Amachala, Awka.
Maku revealed that the duo is providing useful information to aid the command in tracking down their fleeing accomplice.
He assured that investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will face prosecution once inquiries are concluded.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the gang specialises in snatching tricycles while robbing riders and passengers of their valuables,” he added.
Commending his operatives for their prompt response, Maku reaffirmed the NSCDC’s dedication to tackling crime and safeguarding lives and property across Anambra State.
