The Bishop of Anglican Communion, Calabar, Diocese, Cross River State, Rt. Rev. Nneoyi Egbe, has slammed a recent bill before the House of Representatives seeking to establish the National Council for Christian Education.
The cleric condemned the bill during a chat with journalists Monday, on the sidelines of the Eleventh Synod of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Diocese of Calabar.
Egbe, equally lamented the abandonment of viable projects by successive administrations, both at the state and federal levels, noting that it was wrong to regulate Christian education in Nigeria, adding no man can regulate God.
He urged the government to disregard the idea, and rather concentrate on issues currently facing the nation.
Bishop Egbe said, “On paper, this looks good. But we are living in a country where deception and power play are the norm. It is not clear what the motive for this bill is, but we are watching. While we watch, we need to make clear to sponsors of the bill that no mortal can direct what God wants. God cannot be locked in a classroom.
“Consequently, sponsors and operators of this legislation must note that they cannot regulate Christian education. Christianity is about man’s relationship with God, and must not be seen as a regular religion that is man-made. No man can regulate God or what aspects of God are to be taught.”
