Nigerian forward, Chrisantus Uche, made an impactful debut for Getafe, scoring the crucial equalizer in their opening La Liga match of the new season, securing a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.
Uche, a summer signing for Getafe, was given his first start by coach José Bordalás and immediately made his presence felt.
The encounter saw Bilbao take the lead in the 27th minute through Oihan Sancet, but Uche, showing his composure and sharp finishing, restored parity in the 64th minute.
Notably, Nico Williams, fresh from Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, featured for Bilbao after being introduced as a substitute in the 72nd minute, adding some excitement to the game.
Uche’s journey to Getafe has been quite remarkable. He joined the club from Spanish third-division side Ceuta in June 2024, signing a four-year contract.
The dynamic Uche operated as a false No. 9, though he’s equally adept in both defensive and attacking midfield roles.
Getafe will likely be pleased with earning a point away from home.
Born in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, Uche had earlier received an offer from Spanish outfit Moralo CP in July 2022, with his official signing announced in November that year.
He made his senior debut with Moralo’s B team on 20 November 2022, in a challenging 2-1 away defeat to CP Moraleja.
However, just a week later, he found the back of the net, contributing to a resounding 4-0 victory over CF Jaraíz at home.
Uche’s rapid progress continued as he made his first-team debut on 8 January 2023, coming off the bench in a 4-1 triumph over SP Villafranca in the Tercera Federación.
His consistent performances earned him a regular starting role, although the team narrowly missed out on promotion in the play-offs.
