Newcastle United staged a thrilling comeback at Molineux, overturning a halftime deficit to secure a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.
Two long-range strikes in the space of five minutes powered Newcastle into third place in the Premier League standings.
Wolves, who were chasing their first league win of the season, initially took the lead through Mario Lemina’s 36th-minute goal.
The Wolves captain found the net after a clever move saw Jorgen Strand Larsen break down the right and send a square pass into the box, which João Gomes skillfully dummied, leaving Lemina with a simple finish. Wolves dominated the first half, but Newcastle’s persistence paid off after the break.
The game shifted dramatically in the 75th minute when Fabian Schar unleashed a speculative shot from distance that took a deflection off Wolves defender Craig Dawson, leaving goalkeeper Sam Johnstone with no chance as the ball soared into the top corner.
Schar, back from a three-match suspension following a red card against Southampton, provided the spark Newcastle needed to level the score.
Five minutes later, Harvey Barnes, who struggled with a foot injury last season, came alive with a moment of brilliance.
Accelerating down the left wing, he cut inside and rifled a spectacular effort from outside the box, sealing the win for Newcastle.
Barnes, reflecting on his decisive strike, remarked, “When you’re coming on and the team’s behind and they need a goal, you have to take it upon yourself as an attacking player to try and change the game.”
Before Newcastle’s comeback, Wolves had multiple opportunities to extend their lead.
Strand Larsen came agonizingly close to adding a second goal early in the second half, striking the bottom of the upright. Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope also made two crucial saves to keep the visitors in the game.
As Wolves pressed for an equalizer in stoppage time, Pope produced another critical save, diving full length to deny Matheus Cunha and preserve Newcastle’s advantage.
The victory extended Newcastle’s unbeaten run to four matches, moving them to 10 points, equal with Arsenal but behind on goal difference and two points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.
Despite Wolves’ early dominance, their struggles continued, leaving them in the bottom three with just a single point from their opening four fixtures.
Reflecting on the loss, Lemina acknowledged their need for improvement, stating, “We need to change this losing mentality and get back to work and win games now.” Wolves face a tough away test against Aston Villa in their next league outing on Saturday.
