Popular gospel music minister, Nathaniel Bassey, has warned his teeming followers and fans against turning their passion for him and spiritual movements – Hallelujah Challenge into an unholy obsession.
The Hallelujah Challenge crooner issued a warning on Monday evening when a post on Instagram sparked controversy by saying that her future husband must know the ‘Someone’s Knocking At The Door’ singer and his colleagues, Apostle Joshua Selman and Pastor Jerry Eze, is not a Christian. The post spilled into X, fuelling the controversy.
However, in a message shared on social media, Bassey emphasized that knowing him and his songs, participating in the Hallelujah Challenge or following any particular gospel minister does not define a person’s faith.
“Not knowing Nathaniel Bassey or any of the young vibrant servants of God being used does not make you any less a Christian,” he stated. “In fact, there are so many Christians who have never heard of me nor my music. It doesn’t make them any less Christian. They don’t have to know me. I’m not the best thing after sliced bread.”
Quoting Romans 12:3, he encouraged humility and a sober-minded approach to faith, warning against elevating individuals or specific religious gatherings above their intended purpose.
My dear Brothers and Sisters, you are blessed.
Just a note of caution.
Please let’s be careful and guided so we don’t turn our passion to unholy obsession.

Bassey also reminded his followers that not participating in the Hallelujah Challenge should not be a cause for division among believers. Using a metaphor, he compared it to how apples do not grow everywhere, yet that does not make the places where they do not grow inferior.
“Those of us joining should never look down on those not joining. Those who are not joining should also not look down on those joining,” he added, referencing Romans 14:3.
The gospel minister made the remarks in response to numerous online discussions and tags involving his name. While he typically refrains from addressing such topics, he felt compelled to offer clarity and enlightenment.
Concluding his message, Bassey announced the return of the Hallelujah Challenge after a short break, inviting worshippers to come together in praise, after he and his team embarked on a break on Sunday night.
“HC is back tonight with Day 7. So let’s gather before our Father at the altar to offer hallelujah together! NO WAHALA! ONLY HALLELUJAH 😊,” he wrote.
The Hallelujah Challenge, a global worship movement led by Bassey, has attracted millions of participants worldwide, uniting believers in collective praise and prayer sessions.
