The National Association of Nigerian Students, on Friday, declared its disassociation from the upcoming protest organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress over the recent increase in the prices of voice calls and data plans.
In a press briefing held in Gombe State, the Director of Campus Watch Zone of NANS, Tabitha Babayo, alongside NANS Vice President of External Affairs, Mu’azu Hina, emphasized that the planned protest might not tackle the critical challenges currently confronting Nigerian students, such as inadequate educational funding, subpar infrastructure, and insecurity.
Part of the group’s statement read, “The NLC protest may not be well-thought-out, and may not achieve its intended objectives. As students, we are committed to peaceful and constructive engagement, and we believe that there are better ways to address the issues facing Nigerians than through protests.”
“Rather than participating in the protest, NANS urged the Federal Government to take prompt action to repair the deteriorating roads in the North East, particularly the Numan-Yola-Gombe Road, which has turned into a perilous route, endangering the lives of numerous students.
“The poor state of roads in the North East region is not only a safety concern but also a major obstacle to economic development. We demand that the authorities prioritise the repair of these roads and ensure that they are safe for use,” the group stated.
NANS further called on the Federal Government to allocate sufficient funds for the repair and maintenance of roads in the North East and to collaborate with State Governors and other stakeholders to create a thorough plan to tackle the region’s infrastructure problems.
“We are confident that with collective effort and determination, we can make a difference and ensure that the people of the North East region are able to live in safety and dignity,” the statement noted.
