The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency has announced plans to reintroduce a $300 landing fee for helicopter operators in the country, a move aimed at addressing its financial challenges.
Speaking at the 53rd Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association in Kano State on Thursday, Tayo John, NAMA’s Director of Air Traffic Services, disclosed the agency’s intention to recommence the fee collection in the coming weeks.
John explained that while the agency initially began enforcing the charge months ago, the Federal Government halted the process due to prevailing national circumstances.
However, he stressed that this time, the collection would proceed without further delays.
“We will recommence the collection of the $300 landing fee from helicopter operators in the next few weeks. We started earlier, but the government directed us to suspend it due to some issues in the country. This time, there will be no going back,” he stated.
Presenting a paper titled “Financial Constraints Affecting Nigeria’s Air Navigation Provision: Impact and Mitigation Strategies,” John underscored the importance of the fee in alleviating NAMA’s financial strain.
While the exact date for enforcement was not disclosed, John reiterated that the collection was crucial to ensuring the agency’s sustainability and improved air navigation services.
