Lawyers of Popular Nigerian singer Oladapo Oyebanjo, aka D’banj, has described the arrest of the singer as ‘malicious’ and ‘prejudicial’.
PUNCH METRO on Wednesday reported that the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission arrested and detained the singer.
He was accused of fraudulently diverting hundreds of naira earmarked by the Nigerian government for N-Power project, an empowerment programme set up by the Nigerian government in 2016 to address youth unemployment and increase social development.
Reacting to the development, D’banj’s lawyers, Law Corridor, through a press statement signed by Maryam Musa, denied the allegations, while it also described reports of D’banj’s arrest as ‘malicious’ and ‘prejudicial’.
The press statement also stated that “It is instructive to state foremost that the report concerning the arrest and detention of Mr Oladapo Oyebanjo is misconceived, malicious and prejudicial to the justice system anywhere in the world and we would advise that the general public be well guided.”
The singer’s solicitors admitted that the ICPC was currently investigating allegations of diversion of N-POWER funds, adding that they believed the commission will stay the course of professionalism in the matter.
It added, “Emphatically and as a matter of policy, D’banj and his management do not engage in business dealings unless they are legitimate, properly documented and obtainable in law.”
It also urged the ICPC to carry out a thorough investigation, as they stated that characters attempting to bring him (D’banj) into such ridiculous activities must be brought to book.
