Remo Stars Football Club of Ikenne was eliminated from the 2024/2025 African Champions League on Sunday during the first preliminary round, following a 2-3 aggregate defeat to Moroccan side AS FAR Rabat in Rabat.
The 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League runners-up had a promising start, winning the first leg 2-1 in Ikenne on August 18.
However, they struggled to maintain their advantage in the second leg as the Moroccan team launched a relentless offensive.
AS FAR Rabat turned the tide with two crucial second-half goals. Joel Beya, who had scored for AS FAR Rabat in the first leg, broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute.
With about 12 minutes remaining and the score still 1-0 in favour of the hosts, a penalty was awarded to AS FAR Rabat. El Amine Zouhzouh converted the penalty, sealing the tie and eliminating Remo Stars from the competition.
This early exit follows a similar fate for El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club of Maiduguri, who were ousted from the African Confederation Cup’s first preliminary round with a 2-3 aggregate loss.
As a result, Nigeria now has only one club remaining in each of the continental tournaments.
Enyimba International FC of Aba, who had received a bye to the second preliminary round of the African Confederation Cup, will face Burkina Faso’s Etoile Filante in the upcoming round.
