The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday exhumed the remains of a 28-year-old graduate of Lagos State University, Adedamola Ogunbode, who had been missing since January 16.
Ogunbode, a Political Science Education graduate, was discovered buried in a shallow grave behind the LASU fence at its Ojo Campus.
According to the police, four suspects have been arrested in connection with the case, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend four others allegedly linked to the crime.
The suspects were accused of withdrawing all the funds from the deceased’s bank account and sharing the money among themselves.
Confirming the development at the site of the exhumation, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that one of the arrested suspects led investigators to the burial location.
“On January 16, a report was filed at the Ojo Police Division regarding the disappearance of the young man. However, after the new Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, assumed duty on February 18, he ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case,” Hundeyin said.
He further explained that investigations led to the arrest of a key suspect, who not only confessed to the crime but also directed police officers to where the body was buried.
“This case was initially treated as a missing person’s report, but following new intelligence, it was upgraded to a suspected murder case. The suspect in custody confirmed their involvement and showed us the exact burial site,” he added.
Hundeyin assured that the police would intensify efforts to capture the remaining suspects and ensure that those responsible face justice.
“Now that the body has been found, we are in the concluding stages of our investigation. However, we will not relent until all those involved are brought to book,” he said.
The police spokesman also extended condolences to the bereaved family and appreciated the Lagos State Government for its support in crime-fighting efforts.
“The suspects will definitely be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. We use this opportunity to express our sympathies to the family of the deceased and to thank the Lagos State Government for its continuous support in tackling crime in the state,” Hundeyin said.
The police assured the public that justice would be served in the tragic case.
