An EFL Championship team, Middlesbrough, is reportedly close to securing the services of Super Eagles forward, Kelechi Iheanacho from Sevilla.
The 28-year-old Nigerian forward has been at the center of ongoing rumours about a potential departure from Sevilla’s Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium.
According to BBC, Middlesbrough have entered negotiations to bring Iheanacho and winger Samuel Iling-Junior to the club on loan for the remainder of the season.
After leaving Leicester City in the summer to join Sevilla, Iheanacho has found it difficult to make his mark, failing to score in La Liga so far this season.
Multiple reports indicated that Iheanacho turned down a move to Serie A’s Venezia in favour of a potential loan to the Championship club.
Sky Sports had also suggested that Scottish side Celtic, under manager Brendan Rodgers, were contemplating reuniting with the striker, although this remains speculative.
Sevilla’s manager García Pimienta, however, stated that Iheanacho is free to choose his next destination, saying, “Kelechi Iheanacho has a lot of offers and absolute freedom to decide where he wants to go. It will come together anyway, as soon as there is an offer that satisfies all parties,” Pimienta told El Correo.
As part of the loan agreement, Middlesbrough will cover most of Iheanacho’s wages.
Currently, Middlesbrough are in seventh place in the Championship, having played 29 matches.
