Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially approved Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.
The announcement comes nearly three years after the passing of the former monarch, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, on April 22, 2022.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the approval followed thorough consultations and divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the kingmakers of Oyo.
“The Governor has approved the recommendation of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the next Alaafin of Oyo. This decision marks the culmination of a rigorous process undertaken by the Oyomesi and represents a significant step forward for the Oyo Kingdom,” Oyelade stated.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ademola Ojo, also issued a statement, noting that the announcement ends the socio-political and legal disputes that arose following the late Alaafin’s demise.
“This decision puts to rest all the controversies and disputes that have lingered since the passing of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. We urge all citizens of Oyo State to celebrate this historic occasion and support the new Alaafin as he begins his reign,” Ojo said.
The state government expressed optimism about the new monarch’s leadership, emphasizing its significance to the people of Oyo.
“We pray that the reign of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade will usher in peace, prosperity, and unity to the historic Oyo Kingdom,” Oyelade added.
