The organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards have officially announced the nominees for the 2025 edition, honouring excellence in film, television, and digital content produced between January 1 and December 31, 2024.
This year, Lisabi: The Uprising, House of Ga’a, Skeleton Coast, and Freedom Way emerged as the frontrunners, earning multiple nominations across major categories, including Best Movie and Best Director.
In the highly competitive Best Lead Actor category, nominees include Gideon Okeke (Tokunbo), Stan Nze (Suspicion), Femi Adebayo (Seven Doors), and Adedimeji Lateef (Lisabi: The Uprising).
Meanwhile, the Best Lead Actress category features Chioma Chukwuka (Seven Doors), Bimbo Ademoye (Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre), and Uche Montana (Thinline), among others.
Recognising the growing influence of digital storytelling, the Best Digital Content Creator category highlights talents such as Iyo Prosper Adokiye, Maryam Apakagi-Greene, and Elozonam Ogbolu, alongside content teams like Hoviare Freedom and Chiamaka Uzokwe.
For scripted television, Uriri, All Mine, My Fairytale Wedding, and Italo are among the nominees for Best Scripted M-Net Original, while Nigerian Idol and Pastor Wants A Wife (Zambia) are vying for Best Unscripted M-Net Original.
The AMVCA continues to celebrate indigenous language productions, with Seven Doors, Lisabi: The Uprising, Kaka, and Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre nominated for Best Indigenous Language Film (West Africa). Meanwhile, Walvis Tale, The Vow, and Mwizukanji will compete in the Southern Africa category.
Speaking on this year’s lineup, a representative from the AMVCA selection committee noted, “This year’s nominations reflect the richness and diversity of African storytelling. From historical epics to contemporary dramas, these films and series capture the essence of our culture and creativity.”
Veteran filmmaker Bolanle Austen-Peters, nominated for Best Director for House of Ga’a, expressed excitement over the recognition. “It’s an honour to be nominated among such brilliant filmmakers. The African film industry is evolving, and this is a testament to the hard work we all put in.”
The Best Director category features Robert O. Peters (Skeleton Coast), Norman Maake (Inkabi), Femi Adebayo, Adebayo Tijani, and Tope Adebayo (Seven Doors), among others.
In the technical categories, Lisabi: The Uprising, Skeleton Coast, and Christmas in Lagos secured nominations for Best Editing and Cinematography. Similarly, Best Sound/Sound Design nominees include Freedom Way, Seven Doors, and Ajakaju: Beast of Two Worlds.
With the AMVCA known for setting the benchmark in African entertainment, anticipation is high as audiences and industry insiders await the winners. The awards ceremony is set to take place later this year, celebrating the best of African storytelling on a grand stage.
