The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has announced that over 30 states in the country have conducted local government elections following the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on financial autonomy for councils.
This was revealed in a communique issued on Tuesday after the association’s National Executive Council meeting held on December 14, 2024, at the Hillside Royal Hotel in Katsina State.
ALGON expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to empowering local government councils to deliver their constitutional responsibilities effectively.
The judiciary was also praised for its role in safeguarding the financial independence of local governments, a decision described as critical to fostering grassroots development.
“NEC appreciates the efforts of state governors and the Nigeria Governors Forum for ensuring local government elections in over 30 states, resulting in democratically elected chairmen,” the communique stated.
“We urge the remaining states to follow suit and establish a system that truly reflects the will of the people, in line with Mr. President’s vision.”
The association further acknowledged state governors for granting local councils uninterrupted access to funds, which it said has improved service delivery and brought much-needed democratic dividends to citizens.
“NEC assures the governors of a continued robust partnership to ensure governance remains people-centered and impactful,” ALGON stated.
Reaffirming its commitment to strengthening local governance, ALGON pledged to deepen collaboration with stakeholders to foster transparency, accountability, and innovation.
The council emphasized the importance of grassroots engagement, describing it as the foundation for open and effective governance.
The communique underscored ALGON’s resolve to “promote transparency, accountability, and uniformity in service delivery at the grassroots level through community engagement and effective communication.”
