The Lagos State Government has impounded 488 vehicles between January and August 2024 for illegally using Bus Rapid Transit lanes.
This is according to a press release issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on Monday.
The announcement, titled “LASG Issues Strict Warning to Motorists on Persistent BRT Lane Violations,” was shared via LASTMA’s official social media platform.
Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, signed the statement, urging both private and commercial drivers to cease using the dedicated BRT lanes unlawfully.
“The Lagos State Government will not tolerate further violations of BRT lanes, particularly after the road rehabilitation projects completed by the Lagos State Public Works Corporation in areas like Abule-Egba,” Taofiq said.
LASTMA officials highlighted that a significant portion of the violations occurred along the Abule-Egba to Iyana-Ipaja corridor, where improved road conditions make such breaches unjustifiable.
The statement warned, “Motorists using routes from Abule-Egba through Iyana-Ipaja, Dopemu, and Oshodi must comply with lane restrictions.”
All 488 vehicles seized during the eight-month period were taken to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution. The government emphasized its commitment to enforcing the law strictly, stating that violators will face the full legal consequences.
LASTMA’s enforcement activities have been particularly focused in areas such as Ikorodu, Maryland, Anthony, Apongbon, Ojuelegba, and Oyingbo.
“The state government is determined to maintain order and discipline on our roads, especially as we continue to develop critical infrastructure for all Lagosians. However, we need road users to cooperate by adhering to traffic regulations,” the release stated.
LASTMA also revealed that 9,370 vehicles were impounded from January to June 2024 for various traffic offenses, with 3,034 being private vehicles. These included 1,849 cars, 549 buses, and 636 Sports Utility Vehicles.
In a separate operation in December 2023, LASTMA impounded 78 trucks for illegal parking in the Apapa-Ijora area of Lagos.
The Lagos State Government continues to urge motorists to respect traffic laws and avoid further encroachment on designated BRT lanes to ensure smooth traffic flow and effective use of the city’s infrastructure.
