The Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of Ikeja Golf Club, citing public safety risks linked to repeated incidents of negligence at the club.
The Lagos State Building Control Agency took action on Wednesday, sealing the club’s premises on Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja GRA, following numerous complaints of hazards to lives and property.
In a statement, LASBCA Director of Public Affairs Adu Ademuyiwa confirmed the closure, explaining it was driven by mounting concerns over safety in the surrounding area.
A recent incident, where a stray golf ball reportedly hit a LASBCA staff member at the agency’s Ikeja headquarters, intensified the scrutiny, with further reports of damage to vehicles in the vicinity.
“The Lagos State Building Control Agency has had to intervene decisively to protect public safety,” Ademuyiwa stated, referencing the agency’s responsibility to enforce building standards across the state.
“After numerous complaints and a recent injury to our staff, it became clear that immediate action was needed.”
Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, General Manager of LASBCA, criticized the club for failing to implement protective measures, despite repeated warnings from the agency.
He expressed disappointment over what he described as an “unacceptable disregard” for public safety.
“It is alarming to see such negligence from an institution of this standing,” Oki said. “The repeated failure to address safety concerns endangers individuals and causes ongoing damage to vehicles and property in the area.”
Oki pointed out that simple precautions, such as installing netting or adjusting play areas, could have reduced the risks.
The agency emphasized that the club’s lack of action in response to safety advisories ultimately forced LASBCA to seal the premises to prevent further incidents.
LASBCA reiterated that it remains committed to protecting residents and visitors by ensuring compliance with safety regulations, adding that the closure will stay in effect until necessary safety improvements are made.
