Christian Stuani’s late penalty secured a 1-1 draw for Girona against Espanyol in La Liga on Monday, denying the hosts a crucial victory in their battle for survival.
The 38-year-old Uruguayan converted from the spot with just three minutes left, snatching two points away from Espanyol, who were desperate for a win to ease relegation fears.
The Barcelona-based club sat 15th in the 20-team league, just two points above the drop zone, while Girona occupied 13th place, maintaining a five-point cushion.
Stuani’s equalizer also dampened the impact of Jofre Carreras’ stunning goal. The on-loan Mirandes winger had put Espanyol ahead early in the second half with a brilliant solo run.
Collecting the ball in his own half, Carreras surged forward before unleashing a powerful low shot from nearly 25 meters out—an effort that could be a contender for goal of the season.
