The Kogi State Government has announced the successful rescue of six additional students, bringing the total number of students rescued from kidnappers to 20.
According to The PUNCH, this was announced by the state Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, in a statement on Tuesday.
According to Fanwo, the rescue operation was carried out by security agents who engaged the kidnappers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to abandon the students and flee with severe injuries.
The Commissioner said, “Our data shows that there are four students yet to be found.”
“The fierce gun battle between security agents and the kidnappers forced the kidnappers to succumb to superior firepower and abandon the kidnapped students. Some of the kidnappers escaped with severe injuries”. Fanwo said.
The Commissioner noted that four students are still unaccounted for, and the government is working tirelessly to ensure their safe return.
It would be recalled that the families of the six recently rescued students last week have confirmed that their children have arrived home safely.
The Executive Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, has expressed his deep appreciation to the Joint Forces for their efforts and urged them to continue the search until the last student is found.
In addition, the government has taken steps to enhance security around schools, recalibrating the security architecture for efficiency and early warning systems to prevent future occurrences.
This development comes after the police announced the rescue of 14 students last Thursday, bringing the total number of rescued students to 20.
