The Kano Electricity Distribution Company has reported a staggering loss of approximately N6 billion due to a prolonged 12-day power outage that significantly disrupted business and social activities in its service areas across Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states.
KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, revealed that the outage was exacerbated by the vandalism of 70 transformers during this period, creating additional challenges for the company as it sought to restore power to affected communities.
“The company is implementing load shedding, prioritising industrial and commercial feeders to support economic growth, especially in Kano, an industrial hub,” Sani stated.
This strategic approach aims to ensure that vital industries receive electricity to maintain operations while managing the limited supply available.
The blackout originated from a tripping incident on the 330kV transmission line, which resulted in the disconnection of several northwestern and northeastern states from the national grid, highlighting the fragility of the power supply infrastructure in the region.
Sani emphasized the collaborative efforts involved in restoring power, noting that the Transmission Company of Nigeria worked diligently to re-establish grid connectivity.
By balancing distribution between industrial and residential areas, KEDCO successfully restored electricity on Wednesday, gradually bringing back power to communities throughout the northern region.
The situation has underscored the critical need for investments in infrastructure and security measures to prevent future disruptions.
