The Nigerian Postal Service, has sealed unlicensed offices and impounded some motorcycles used for illegal courier and logistics operations in Katsina State.
The General Manager, Courier and Logistics Regulatory Departments of the NIPOST, Mr. Dotun Shonde, who disclosed this said that the main goal of the exercise was to sanitise the sector infiltrated by unlicensed and illegal operators nationwide.
“There abound the issue of public safety and security threat due to carriage of illicit drugs and prohibited items like small arms and ammunition, guns, gold, monies and obscene items,” he said.
He further said that unethical sharp practices like price undercutting, pilfering, broaching, damages, loss and dumping of customers’ items, poaching and subletting of operating licenses were practised, with a mountain of public complaints about customers being duped or obtaining money from them under false pretences, no traceable office address nor registered brand name.
He equally said that overloading and carriage of items above the stipulated 50kg has shown lack of professionalism.
Shonde said more than 200 illegal operators were identified in Katsina alone, stressing that most of them were served with demand notice, but they failed to comply.
While noting that due process must be followed for those with genuine business, he said the companies must registered with NIPOST or face the wrath of the law.
