Kaduna State University lecturers have embarked on an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare concerns, citing the failure of the state government to address their demands.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, KASU branch, announced the industrial action in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The statement, signed by the branch Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and Secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri, indicated that the decision followed approval from the union’s National Executive Council.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, KASU branch wishes to notify the public that its National Executive Council has approved the request of the congress of the branch to proceed on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike with effect from today, Feb. 18, 2025,” the statement read.
According to ASUU, the move comes after repeated attempts to resolve outstanding entitlements failed, as promises from the Kaduna State Government lacked “substance, specific details, and actionable timelines.”
Among the issues raised by the union is the non-payment of withheld salaries, including 60 per cent from September 2017 and full salaries from May to September 2022.
The lecturers are also demanding the payment of Earned Academic Allowances dating back to 2016, promotion arrears, and allowances for supervising the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme.
Other grievances include the non-remittance of pension contributions between 2009 and 2019, unpaid entitlements to families of deceased members, and the implementation of a 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage award.
ASUU also stressed the need to restore the university’s autonomy, which it described as a critical issue in the ongoing dispute.
“We have exhausted all avenues for dialogue, but the government’s failure to provide clear commitments has left us with no choice but to take this action,” the union stated.
