The Garun Mallam Local Government Area of Kano State has indefinitely closed the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market, citing its alleged use as a hub for prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral practices.
The Council Chairman, Aminu Kadawa, confirmed the decision, explaining that the market had deviated from its intended purpose.
He stated, “The market has unfortunately become a center for immoral activities, which is unacceptable. To restore order and decency, we have decided to shut it down indefinitely.”
Kadawa noted that all occupants were given a seven-day deadline to vacate the premises or face legal consequences. He assured that plans for reopening the market under improved conditions would be communicated later.
The decision was welcomed by the state’s Commissioner for Tourism and Management, Aisha Saji, who highlighted previous issues at the market during her tenure as Commissioner for Women Affairs.
She recalled a security raid she led alongside Hisbah officials, where 43 individuals were apprehended for alleged prostitution and illegal sale of alcohol.
“Among those arrested, 34 were females and nine males, aged between 15 and 18. Shockingly, 14 of them tested positive for HIV, with some unaware of their status,” Saji revealed.
The suspects reportedly included individuals from neighboring states such as Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, and Taraba, further raising concerns about the market’s activities.
Saji also reiterated her earlier call for the market’s demolition and the establishment of a skill acquisition center in its place.
“This closure should mark not only an end to immoral activities but also a beginning for meaningful development,” she emphasized.
She argued that creating a skills development facility would address unemployment among youths and provide sustainable livelihoods.
“By equipping our young people with skills, we can tackle the root causes of these societal vices,” she added.
