The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Kano State has reported the arrest of 1,345 suspects and the seizure of 8.430 metric tons of illegal drugs in 2024.
This was disclosed by the State Commander, Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday.
According to Idris-Ahmad, the apprehended suspects include 1,301 men and 44 women. The confiscated substances comprised cannabis, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, codeine, and more than five million tablets of tramadol.
“In our efforts to strengthen operations, we introduced ‘Operation Hana Maye’ to curb drug abuse and enhance public safety across Kano State,” the commander said.
As part of the initiative, the agency dismantled more than 20 drug dens located in areas such as Filin Idi, Dan Agundi, Sani Abacha Youth Center, and Sani Abacha Stadium.
In addition to its enforcement activities, the command carried out 1,114 drug integrity tests for candidates aspiring to contest local council elections. The goal, Idris-Ahmad noted, was to encourage responsible leadership and promote good governance.
The NDLEA also executed 207 anti-drug campaigns and conducted 202 visa clearance drug tests to curb trafficking and uphold the nation’s international reputation.
Highlighting the agency’s rehabilitative efforts, Idris-Ahmad revealed that 101 drug addicts underwent counseling and rehabilitation, enabling their reintegration into society.
The commander praised the NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba-Marwa (retd.), for his unwavering support, as well as the Kano State Government, security agencies, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders for their collaborative efforts in combating drug abuse.
“Our officers and men remain dedicated to intelligence-driven operations and community partnerships aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks and ensuring a healthier society,” Idris-Ahmad emphasized.
He further assured the public that the command would sustain its fight against drug abuse, leveraging innovative strategies to create a safer environment for the people of Kano State.
