The Kano State Government has acquired 52 trucks of fertilizers valued at N1.2 billion and distributed them at no cost to small-scale farmers throughout the state’s 44 Local Government Areas.
According to The PUNCH, the State Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, announced this on Tuesday during a news briefing about the government’s agricultural interventions.
The government has equally bought 180 more trucks of fertilizer for N5 billion from the State Fertilizer Production Company.
These fertilizers are being sold to the 44 local governments at a subsidized rate, amounting to half the original price.
The commissioner also mentioned that the Federal Government is providing NPK and urea fertilizers, which will be distributed to farmers free of charge.
“We are to receive NPK from Minna, Kaduna, and urea from Port Harcourt on the Federal Government support,” he stated.
Mahmoud noted that a committee has been formed under the interim chairmen of the local governments to oversee the efficient distribution of fertilizers across the 44 LGAs.
“The government has set up a committee of traditional, religious institutions, police, and other stakeholders, to ensure that the commodities reached out to real farmers in the state,” he added.
He explained that the fertilizers already delivered to the local government areas are part of the state government’s initiative to ensure the availability and accessibility of these commodities, particularly for smallholder farmers.
