The Kano State government has set aside N8 billion for this year’s Ramadan feeding programme, Governor Abba Yusuf has revealed.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for the distribution of 1,250 cartons of dates donated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, the governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Farouk Ibrahim, expressed appreciation for the continued support from the Saudi government.
“The donation comes at a critical time when the state government is working hard to provide food items to the less privileged amid economic hardship,” he said.
Yusuf emphasized that Kano remains the most peaceful state in northern Nigeria, attracting a large population, which in turn places additional pressure on infrastructure and social services.
“This year, Ramadan is coming at a very difficult time when Kano State is the only inland of peace in northern Nigeria, so the pressure on the government, on the people, and on infrastructure is enormous,” he stated.
He appealed to the Saudi authorities to consider constructing a psychiatric hospital and renovating the Displaced Children Camp in the state to improve the welfare of vulnerable groups.
The event also saw the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Kibiya, commending Saudi Arabia’s contributions to humanitarian efforts. He described the country as a “strong pillar of humanitarian affairs globally.”
The Consul-General of Saudi Arabia in Kano, Ahmad Adamawi, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Kano’s humanitarian initiatives. He also lauded Governor Yusuf’s administration for its strides in health, education, and infrastructure.
The donated dates were distributed to associations representing people with disabilities, Islamic clerics, and other beneficiaries.
Meanwhile, in his Ramadan message, Yusuf urged the business community to lower the prices of essential goods to ease the financial burden on citizens during the fasting period.
“Feeding in this month is very significant. I call on everyone to support their relatives and the vulnerable,” he said, emphasizing the importance of unity and generosity.
He further encouraged Kano residents to embrace peace and dedicate their time to worship and prayers for the state’s continued prosperity.
