The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kaduna State University branch, has embarked on an indefinite strike starting February 18, 2025, due to outstanding welfare concerns.
The decision was conveyed in a statement signed by the branch chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri.
The statement, released on Tuesday via the News Agency of Nigeria, confirmed that the action had received the approval of ASUU’s National Executive Council.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, KASU branch wishes to notify the public that its National Executive Council has approved the request of the congress of the branch to proceed on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike with effect from today, Feb. 18, 2025,” the statement read.
The union emphasized that members of the congress had outrightly dismissed the Kaduna State government’s assurances, citing the lack of concrete commitments, specific timelines, and detailed action plans regarding the payment of pending entitlements.
Among the grievances listed were the non-payment of withheld salaries, including 60 percent from September 2017 and full salaries from May to September 2022. Other unresolved matters included the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances dating back to 2016, outstanding promotion arrears, and supervision allowances for the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme.
Additionally, the union pointed out concerns over the non-payment of Group Life Assurance benefits and other entitlements to deceased members, non-remittance of pensions between 2009 and 2019, and the non-implementation of the 25 percent and 35 percent wage award.
Another critical issue highlighted was the need for the full restoration of the university’s autonomy.
