Human rights lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has strongly criticized a viral video allegedly showing officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control looting shops at the Onitsha Ogbougwu market in Anambra State.
Ejiofor, who serves as the lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra, described the incident as a serious violation that requires immediate and thorough investigation.
He emphasized that justice must be served, and the affected traders should receive fair compensation for their losses.
Condemning NAFDAC’s recent actions, he stated, “I strongly condemn the indiscriminate closure of Ogbo Ogwu market and other adjoining markets at Onitsha Bridgehead by NAFDAC under the guise of combating fake and counterfeit drugs.”
While acknowledging the importance of tackling counterfeit pharmaceuticals, Ejiofor stressed that enforcement should be carried out within the bounds of the law and with respect for ethical standards.
He warned that the worst fears about the agency’s operations have now been confirmed.
“In my previous public statement, I urged security agencies and NAFDAC to investigate their personnel implicated in these allegations. However, despite the gravity of the situation, no action has been taken.”
Referring to the latest evidence captured in the video, Ejiofor noted that it exposes a betrayal of public trust by those tasked with regulatory enforcement.
One of the victims, he revealed, has suffered severe shock from the ordeal and is currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital.
He described her situation as not only an economic attack but a violation of her dignity.
“The heart-wrenching testimony of this devastated trader is both troubling and unacceptable. Disturbingly, information available to us confirms that this innocent woman is currently receiving medical care at an undisclosed hospital after suffering severe shock from this traumatic incident. This is not just an economic assault but a direct attack on her dignity and well-being.”
Ejiofor has called on security agencies to swiftly investigate the matter, ensuring those responsible are held accountable.
He also urged NAFDAC to provide appropriate reparations to the victims, reinforcing the need for justice to be visibly and meaningfully delivered.
