The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has imposed a restriction on vehicular movement in Edo State ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.
The move is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and credible election process, according to a statement released by the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi.
The restriction will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day, affecting all forms of transportation, including roads and waterways.
However, Adejobi clarified that those on essential duties, such as accredited media personnel, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders, are exempt from the order.
Adejobi stated, “The Inspector-General of Police has announced comprehensive security measures to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process during the upcoming Edo off-cycle election.”
As part of the security measures, the police have banned the use of security aides and escorts accompanying VIPs to polling stations and collation centres.
The use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles has also been prohibited.
“Unauthorized security personnel and quasi-security outfits are prohibited from operating during the election,” Adejobi said, adding that the ban is intended to create a calm environment for voters.
Special attention will be provided to vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and elderly citizens to ensure they can access polling stations in both urban and rural areas.
Adejobi further warned against misuse of emergency lines provided by the police for election day, cautioning citizens not to prank call the control room or designated help numbers.
“The designated election lines for inquiries and reporting are DIG Election DIG Frank Mba, 07025000383, and AIG Election AIG Benneth Igwe, 09085000029,” Adejobi said.
In his statement, the IGP called on citizens to report any suspicious activities that could undermine the integrity of the election.
He urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to act responsibly and in accordance with the law, warning that any attempt to disrupt the election would be met with the full force of the law.
The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a secure and democratic environment for the election.
