Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed strong disapproval of the recent mass protests, which involved looting, property destruction, and attempts to seize government buildings.
These actions were carried out by individuals protesting against the hardships under President Bola Tinubu’s administration on Thursday.
In a live broadcast addressing the situation, Egbetokun emphasized the importance of maintaining public order and safety
He directed all police units to remain on high alert to ensure the protection of the public.
“We acknowledge the right of citizens to protest, but this right is not absolute. Citizens also have duties and responsibilities towards their nation, including being law-abiding and loyal. Understanding your rights is important, but it is equally crucial to fulfill your duties and responsibilities,” Egbetokun stated.
He further explained the significance of the red bands worn by police officers, “The red bands we are wearing signify that our command is on high alert. Those claiming they were not served court orders must understand that serving faceless individuals is challenging. Their threats were made on social media, and they were served through the same platform.”
Egbetokun also expressed his sorrow over the loss of four lives in Borno due to an IED explosion, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region.
Additionally, he noted the police’s successful efforts in preventing a similar incident in Lagos, underscoring the effectiveness of heightened security measures in mitigating threats.
