The Confederation of African Football has announced that the draw ceremony for the 2024 African Nations Championship will take place on Wednesday, January 15.
As part of preparations, Nigeria’s 26 home-based players are set to begin their training camp today at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, ahead of the tournament.
The eighth edition of CHAN will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda from February 1 to 28, 2025.
The draw itself will be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
A total of 18 countries will compete for the championship, which is exclusively reserved for players from domestic leagues within their respective nations.
The participating countries include: Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Congo, DR Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, Rwanda, Zambia, Angola, and Madagascar.
The three co-host nations—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania—have been seeded as A1, B1, and C1, respectively, with the remaining 15 teams placed into pots 1, 2, and 3 based on their performances in the last three editions.
Pot 1 consists of Morocco and reigning champions Senegal. Pot 2 includes Guinea, Zambia, Madagascar, Rwanda, and Sudan, while Pot 3 features Nigeria, Mauritania, Niger, Congo, Angola, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, and DR Congo.
Meanwhile, Coach Daniel Ogunmodede’s 26 invited players will converge in Ikenne today.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles B made a significant achievement in the qualification series, overcoming Ghana’s Black Galaxies with a 3-1 victory in Uyo after a goalless draw in Accra.
Notable players expected in camp include Remo Stars’ Sodiq Ismail and Jide Fatokun, both of whom are linked with potential transfers, alongside Kano Pillars’ midfielder Rabiu Ali, captain Nduka Junior, goalkeeper Henry Ozoemena, Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, midfielder Saviour Isaac, and forward Sikiru Alimi.
Though Nigeria has never won the competition, the team secured third place at the 2014 edition in South Africa and reached the final in 2018, where they were defeated by hosts Morocco.
