Erling Haaland dazzled once again as Manchester City overcame a spirited Brentford to secure a 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium.
The Norwegian striker scored twice and came close to making Premier League history by netting hat-tricks in three consecutive matches.
Despite being the width of a post away from this feat, Haaland’s performance was a testament to his exceptional form and resilience.
The match began with an unexpected jolt for City. Within just 22 seconds, Brentford’s Yoane Wissa stunned the home crowd by heading in a goal after a mix-up between City’s John Stones and goalkeeper Ederson.
The goal was set up by Kristoffer Ajer’s cross and Keane Lewis-Potter’s header back across the goal. The early setback rattled City, who were then forced into defensive scrambles. Rico Lewis managed to clear a dangerous situation when Bryan Mbeumo got behind the defense, and Ederson made several crucial saves to keep City in the game.
City gradually regained their composure and levelled the score through Haaland. A deflected pass from Kevin De Bruyne fell to the striker, who swiftly turned and shot past Brentford’s goalkeeper, Mark Flekken, aided by a deflection off Ethan Pinnock.
Haaland’s influence grew as he added his second goal just after the hour mark. Racing onto a long ball from Ederson, he sidestepped Pinnock’s challenge and deftly chipped the ball over Flekken.
Despite their setback, Brentford continued to challenge City. Jack Grealish forced a clearance from Christian Norgaard, and Lewis-Potter tested Ederson with a shot.
However, Brentford’s task became more challenging with Wissa suffering an injury before halftime.
City’s fortunes improved with the return of Rodri from injury, and new signing Savinho had a chance to add to their lead but blasted over.
Flekken was busy in the second half, making a series of impressive saves from Haaland and Savinho. The City striker had several opportunities to complete his hat-trick and reach his 100th goal for the club but was thwarted by the post, a block, and a save from Flekken.
In the final moments, Brentford nearly stole a point when Yehor Yarmolyuk dragged a stoppage-time shot wide, but City held on to secure their fourth consecutive win.
Despite looming off-field issues, including a long-awaited hearing into alleged financial breaches, City’s on-field performance remains robust, showcasing their strong start to the new season.
