Two residents of Briun community, located in Bou-Ko Kingdom within Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, were killed in a violent attack by gunmen on Tuesday night.
The assailants reportedly struck at around 8 p.m., leaving many residents in fear.
According to The PUNCH, local sources said the attack left the community in shock as some people stayed indoors upon hearing the gunfire, while others fled after discovering the bodies of the victims. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
Bright Nwiyorde, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Ken Saro-Wiwa Surveillance Group and a resident of the area, called for a swift investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
He also urged authorities to enhance security in the area to prevent future incidents.
“In Bou-Ko Kingdom, unknown gunmen shot two people in Briun community at night. We don’t know who they are, which is why we are calling on the government, the Commissioner of Police, the Khana local government chairman, and local security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Nwiyorde said.
He further stated, “As a security person myself, I am also conducting my own investigation to assist the authorities in getting to the root of the matter.”
Meanwhile, Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, said she had not yet received a formal report on the incident but would follow up with the Divisional Police Officer in the area. As of Thursday evening, no updates had been provided.
