Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, took decisive action on Saturday by visiting flood-stricken communities in Gummi Local Government Area.
His visit aimed to assess the damage caused by the recent heavy rainfall and to deliver much-needed relief to the affected residents.
According to The PUNCH, in a statement released on Sunday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, it was revealed that the Governor had pledged N100 million in financial aid to support those impacted by the disaster.
The severe flooding, triggered by relentless downpours, submerged a significant number of homes in several communities, leaving many residents displaced.
Governor Lawal’s visit commenced at the palace of the Emir of Gummi, His Royal Highness, Justice Lawal Hassan, where he paid his respects and discussed the situation.
Following his meeting with the Emir, Governor Lawal toured Gummi town, where he personally expressed his condolences to the flood victims.
- He then proceeded to Gayari town, another heavily affected area, to evaluate the full extent of the destruction.
In his remarks, the Governor emphasized the prompt response his administration had taken upon learning of the disaster.
“Today, I am in Gummi Local Government Area to offer my condolences and conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the communities devastated by flooding caused by heavy rainfall last week,” he stated.
He further disclosed that he had immediately sent two of his commissioners to visit the affected areas and offer support on his behalf.
Gollowing this, the Deputy Governor also visited, and a team of engineers was dispatched to the site to identify the root causes of the flooding and propose solutions.
Lawal assured the residents that measures were already in place to prevent a recurrence of such an incident.
He announced, “It is important to note that I have instructed the immediate commencement of work to prevent such a situation in the future. I want to take this opportunity to inform you that I have donated 10,000 bags of food, including rice, maize, and millet, to be distributed among the flood victims.”

The Governor added, “I am also, on behalf of the Zamfara State Government, supporting the affected victims with N100 million.” Additionally, he revealed plans to allocate land to the victims away from high-risk zones, enabling them to rebuild their lives in safer locations.
