The Ogun State Government has dismissed allegations that Governor Dapo Abiodun called Nigerians “sore losers” amid the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the government clarified that Abiodun’s remarks were directed at certain political figures exploiting youth dissent to destabilize the country.
Akinmade emphasized that Governor Abiodun did not suggest, even indirectly, that ordinary Nigerians expressing their grievances over the economic situation were sore losers.
Instead, the governor pointed to specific individuals from the 2023 elections capitalizing on the unrest for their political gain.
The statement highlighted that the disorder associated with the protests supported the governor’s previous assertions.
It also noted Abiodun’s longstanding appreciation for Nigerian youths, students, and workers, whom he has consistently praised.
On Friday, Governor Abiodun commended Ogun residents, particularly the youth, for their peaceful conduct during the protests and reiterated his administration’s commitment to their well-being.
The statement further clarified that Governor Abiodun’s comments were misrepresented and that he was targeting political adversaries using the protest to undermine President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
It concluded by asserting that Abiodun holds great respect for the protesters and has made this clear on multiple occasions.
“The claim that Governor Abiodun insulted ordinary Nigerians is baseless and malicious,” the statement read.
“Governor Abiodun’s reference to ‘sore losers’ was aimed at opposition leaders misusing the protest to incite unrest. His respect for the protesters remains unwavering.”
