Crystal Palace duo, Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton have secured spots in England’s Euro 2024 squad, while notable absences include Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire, and James Maddison.
Eze, with just three caps for England, impressed in Monday’s 3-0 friendly win over Bosnia-Herzegovina, while Wharton, 20, made his international debut in the same match.
Gareth Southgate omitted Manchester City’s Grealish, Manchester United’s Maguire, and Tottenham’s Maddison from the 26-man squad. Burnley’s James Trafford, Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah, Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones also missed the cut after being on the original 33-player shortlist.
Luke Shaw, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since February, made the squad, with Southgate stating he could feature in the second group game.
England will face Iceland in a friendly at Wembley on Friday, their final match before Euro 2024 kicks off on June 14 in Germany.
Quansah, 21, will stay with the squad for the Iceland game as a precaution against further defensive injury concerns.
Southgate said, “Luke has progressed really well in the last couple of days and we think he could have some involvement in the second group game. You can take one gamble, and that’s a calculated gamble where we have enough evidence we believe it can pay off.”
