Florentino Pérez has been reappointed as president of Real Madrid until 2029, following the closure of the candidacy submission deadline with no opposing contenders.
This marks his seventh term and the fifth consecutive one without opposition since regaining control of the club in 2009, cementing his status as one of football’s most influential figures.
Reappointment Without Elections
On January 7, Pérez formally requested the club’s Electoral Board to begin the presidential and Board of Directors election process.
Ten days later, his candidacy—the only one submitted—was approved.
According to the club’s regulations, the absence of rival candidates negates the need for a pre-approval procedure, automatically confirming his reappointment.
The club confirmed his continued presidency in an official statement on Sunday, referencing Article 40, Section E, Point 2 of Real Madrid’s statutes, which facilitates automatic re-election in the absence of competing candidacies.
A Legacy of Unmatched Success
Since first taking office in 2000, Pérez has guided Real Madrid through an era of unparalleled success.
Under his leadership, the club has claimed 65 titles in both football and basketball, including seven UEFA Champions League trophies and three EuroLeague championships.
This achievement makes him the club’s most successful president, surpassing the iconic Santiago Bernabéu.
Pérez who will turn 78 in March, initially assumed the presidency in 2000 after defeating then-president Ramón Mendoza. He was re-elected in 2004, briefly stepped down in 2006, and returned in 2009 to initiate a second era of sustained sporting and financial triumph.
