The Federal Government has reiterated its readiness to engage in “constructive dialogue” with Niger Republic’s leadership to ease rising diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
This position was affirmed on Tuesday by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who emphasized the country’s commitment to fostering peace and stability in West Africa.
In a statement, Tuggar stressed the importance of “candid discussions to address mutual concerns,” responding to allegations made by the President of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, General Abdourahman Tchiani.
The accusations, which included claims of Nigeria’s collusion with France to destabilize Niger’s junta-led government, were dismissed as unfounded by Nigeria over the weekend.
Tchiani, during a Christmas Day interview, accused France of collaborating with militant groups in the Lake Chad region with Nigeria’s alleged complicity. “Nigerian authorities are not unaware of this underhanded move,” he was quoted as saying by AFP.
The claims have heightened apprehension in communities along the Nigeria-Niger border.
Residents have expressed concern about the potential impact of the strained relations on their livelihoods and security.
In his statement, Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to dialogue as the cornerstone for resolving regional disputes.
“We reaffirm our respect for Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in alignment with ECOWAS principles,” Tuggar said.
He urged Niger’s leadership to engage in open discussions and suggested confidence-building measures to ease humanitarian challenges affecting border communities.
“We welcome and encourage open, constructive dialogue between our governments and invite Niger’s leadership to join us in candid discussions to address mutual concerns. We are prepared to explore confidence-building measures, such as a collective support, to alleviate the humanitarian impact on our border communities,” he added.
Tuggar also called on regional and international partners to prioritize reconciliation and stability over actions that could exacerbate divisions. Stressing Nigeria’s non-tolerance for actions undermining Niger’s security, he underscored the importance of mutual respect and cooperation.
He highlighted the longstanding historical, cultural, and economic ties between the two nations, noting the interconnectedness of their futures.
“As brothers and neighbours, Nigeria and Niger share deep historical and cultural ties, underscored by trade and economic interdependence. These enduring connections are reminders of our intrinsically linked destinies. Therefore, unfounded allegations cause needless tensions that could cause dissaffection and threaten the collective progress of our region,” he said.
The statement gave an assurance of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to diplomacy, respect, and peace.
Tuggar expressed optimism that meaningful dialogue would pave the way for a harmonious and prosperous future for both countries.
“Nigeria remains guided by the principles of diplomacy, mutual respect, and the pursuit of peace. We are confident that through constructive engagement, we can work together towards a more prosperous and stable future for our people,” he said.
