The Federal Government has trained 541 youths in modern agricultural techniques as part of efforts to address unemployment and promote self-reliance among young Nigerians.
The Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, announced this during the closing ceremony of the training program held at the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre in Jos, Plateau State. His remarks were conveyed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Press, Ebunoluwa Esan.
Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, Olawande explained that the program, organized by the Ministry of Youth Development, focused on skills such as cassava processing, beekeeping, and fishery. He emphasized the initiative’s goal to empower participants with entrepreneurial and agricultural skills to ensure self-sufficiency.
“Our aim is to transform you into employers of labor, steering you away from a constant search for jobs,” the minister said. “I can confidently say we are making significant progress. Youth engagement in agriculture is a key priority for the Ministry of Youth Development.”
The 541 beneficiaries were selected from the North East, North West, and North Central regions of the country. Olawande assured them that the government remains committed to sustaining and expanding the program.
“Each year will bring more improvements. Your recommendations and requests have been noted, and we will present a detailed report for implementation once back in Abuja. I assure you that we will strive to fulfill these plans,” he added.
Highlighting the demographic significance of young people, who constitute over 70 percent of Nigeria’s population, the minister stressed the importance of investing in their potential. “The future of this nation rests on the shoulders of the youth. It is crucial to equip them with the skills and resources needed to succeed,” he said.
In his remarks, the Adagwom of Jos Izere Chiefdom, Emmanuel Ajik, commended the Federal Government for initiating the training, describing it as a critical step toward empowering the youth.
“No society can achieve meaningful development without preparing its youth for success,” Ajik noted. He encouraged the participants to make use of the knowledge and skills gained during the program, urging them to contribute actively to the country’s progress.
The traditional ruler also congratulated the organizers and participants, underscoring the role of such initiatives in fostering nation-building and leadership among the youth.
