The Federal Government has launched the National Broadband Alliance, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and expanding internet access nationwide.
According to The PUNCH, the initiative was unveiled on Tuesday in Lagos by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, who was represented by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Aminu Maida.
Tijani highlighted that broadband penetration in Nigeria has significantly improved, rising from 6% in 2015 to about 42% as of October 2024. However, he acknowledged the need for further expansion to ensure nationwide access to high-speed internet.
“While the progress made in broadband penetration is commendable, we recognise that much more needs to be done to ensure every Nigerian can enjoy the benefits of reliable, high-speed internet,” Tijani said.
To accelerate connectivity, the government plans to deploy 90,000 km of fibre optic backbone using a Special Purpose Vehicle. This will help link underserved and rural communities to broadband infrastructure.
The minister stressed that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises innovation, technology, and collaboration as drivers of national development.
“These targets reflect our unwavering commitment to ensuring that broadband is accessible, affordable, and inclusive for all Nigerians. However, we are also aware of the challenges ahead,” he stated.
Tijani underscored the importance of strategic partnerships with investors, donors, and stakeholders to overcome infrastructure challenges and make broadband more affordable.
He also reaffirmed the government’s goal of achieving 70% broadband penetration by 2025, ensuring a minimum internet speed of 25 Mbps in urban areas, and providing broadband access to 80% of the population by 2027.
“Achieving these goals will require more than just the efforts of the private sector. It will demand a holistic approach, including collaborations that accelerate the rollout of critical infrastructure,” Tijani added.
